In 1992 OSHA announced a workplace standard entitled Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens.  The purpose of the standard was to eliminate or to minimize occupational exposure to hepatitis B Virus, HIV and other bloodborne illnesses for employees who face a health risk from such an exposure on the job.  This standard includes recognized first aid response teams and first aid designated individuals in schools and businesses.

The Bloodborne Pathogen Course offered by Huber Health Services includes the following:

  • Review of OSHA regulations concerning bloodborne pathogen exposure.
  • A review of modes of transmission of bloodborne diseases.
  • Work situations in which bloodborne pathogen exposure could occur.
  • Procedures and protective measures that are to be used to reduce or eliminate the risk of exposures.
  • A demonstration of the correct method of removing contaminated gloves.
  • A review of the exposure control plan.
  • Procedures to follow should the employee be exposed to potentially infectious body fluids.
  • Information on post exposure evaluation and follow up.
  • A review of the benefits and risks associated with hepatitis B vaccine.
  • Overview of previous incidents of exposure to blood that have occurred in similar employment settings.

The class consists of watching a DVD, discussion of the above components and hands on practice with safe glove removal.  There is a short, written test.  Course completion cards and books are provided.
